Cathodic Protection
Cathodic Protection is more than compliance—it’s about preventing infrastructure failures before they happen.
Cathodic Protection
Cathodic Protection (CP) is a proven, cost-effective method of controlling external corrosion on steel pipelines and structures. It is both a regulatory requirement and a critical part of safe pipeline operations. Codes and regulators—including the AER (Alberta Energy Regulator), CER (Canada Energy Regulator), and PHMSA (Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration)—require operators to maintain and monitor effective CP systems.
While CP mitigates metal loss, regulators have also cautioned against overprotection, which can contribute to stress corrosion cracking in older pipelines. Balancing these factors requires careful engineering oversight and ongoing monitoring. Vision Integrity provides the expertise to design, assess, and maintain CP systems that meet compliance requirements while extending the safe operating life of your assets.
Engineering Support and Design
Vision Integrity performs engineering assessments to determine the optimal CP solution for each project. We advise clients on compliance requirements and provide systematic methods to reduce external corrosion risk rankings. Our services include:
- CP design for new pipelines and structures
- Maintenance planning and repair support
- Engineering assessments for existing CP systems
- Projects ranging from temporary sacrificial anodes to large impressed current ground beds
By combining regulatory knowledge with practical field experience, we help operators build systems that are efficient, compliant, and effective.
Monitoring and Maintenance
Our engineers assist in selecting the right remote monitoring hardware, interpreting CP data, and addressing anomalies.
Monitoring and Maintenance
Effective CP requires ongoing monitoring. In many cases, systems are surveyed annually, though requirements vary by jurisdiction. Vision Integrity provides on-site inspections as well as support for remote monitoring solutions, which have become increasingly popular due to their low cost and ability to deliver live data.
Our engineers assist in selecting the right remote monitoring hardware, interpreting CP data, and addressing anomalies. For remote or hard-to-access sites, we use data from related locations and apply engineering principles to ensure coverage and compliance. Where required, we can also act on behalf of clients to monitor CP systems and respond to issues directly.
Jurisdictional Requirements
Cathodic Protection requirements vary across provinces:
- Alberta (AER) – annual CP system surveys are required
- Interprovincial pipelines (CER) – annual surveys required
- British Columbia and Saskatchewan – risk-based monitoring programs may be structured by operators
Vision Integrity’s experience across jurisdictions allows us to adapt programs to both regulatory requirements and operational realities.
